Psiphon Review

Psiphon is a handy service that has one goal in mind: to help you bypass content filtering and Internet censorship. On their site, they give a lot of information about the mission and objective of their service. They say that any amount of Internet censorship is unlawful and a violation of our rights as humans. Their service seeks to free up the Internet and unblock sites so our rights aren’t taken advantage of.

Psiphon administers multiple proxy servers that users can connect to using an SSH or VPN connection. However, they do something that some other VPN service providers don’t do. They constantly recirculate and churn their service by adding new servers that haven’t been blocked yet. You see, after a while, organizations may realize that users are taking advantage of a proxy server to circumvent network restrictions. All they need to do is to block users from the proxy server, and the users won’t have access to blocked resources. By updating and adding to their server list, Psiphon ensures that organizations can’t keep blocking them. In addition, each of their servers contains a certificate so you don’t have to worry about dangerous connections.

There is one drawback, however. They don’t seem to support all of the major operating systems. While it is true that they support Windows and Android devices, their download page doesn’t provide any options for Macs or the iPhone. However, if you are an Android or Windows user, you can easily take advantage of this free service.

Security:

This is where things get a little tricky. Psiphon does, in fact, use security protocols For example, it employs VPNs and SSH to ensure security.

They will help hide your traffic as it crosses and ISPs network en route to its destination. However, they make an incredibly important claim on their website. They will make no guarantees to your privacy or your online security. Instead, their focus is on unblocking content so you can browse the web unrestricted. They make the following claim:

Psiphon is designed to provide you with open access to online content. Psiphon does not increase your online privacy, and should not be considered or used as an online security tool.

It may not increase your Internet security, but it will certainly open up the web.

Customer Service and Support:

The website caters to users from around the world and is available in a wide variety of languages. In addition, they provide a solid user’s guide as well as a FAQ section to help you out should you have any questions or problems. However, their guidance regarding support is a little problematic. They do little to tell you how to reach them. If you do need to contact them, all support initiation is done through their software client.

In summary, this is a free service that shouldn’t be seen as a security enhancement. Instead, it is a free way to browse the web unrestricted on Windows and Android devices.
